How to Clean Black Granite Worktops
Black granite shows marks and shine more readily than paler stones, so a little regular care keeps it looking its best:
- Everyday cleaning: Wipe up spills (particularly acidic ones like wine, lemon juice, or vinegar) as soon as they happen. For daily cleaning, warm water, a soft cloth, and a small amount of mild washing-up liquid are all you need. Avoid abrasive scourers, bleach, and acidic or ammonia-based cleaning products: they can dull the polish and strip the sealant over time.
- Polishing black granite worktops: To bring back the shine, use a specialist granite polish rather than a general kitchen spray, and buff with a soft, dry cloth in circular motions. This is particularly worthwhile on polished black granite, where any streaking or dullness will be more visible.
- Sealing and protecting your worktop: Granite is a natural, porous stone, so it should be professionally sealed on installation and resealed periodically (typically every one to two years, depending on use) to keep it stain resistant and hygienic. A simple test is to splash a little water onto the surface: if it beads rather than soaking in, your seal is still doing its job. Using a trivet or worktop saver under hot pans, and a board for food prep, will also help protect the surface and the sealant long-term, even though black granite is naturally heat- and scratch-resistant.
- Chips and repairs: Black granite is tough, but accidental chips can happen. Unlike quartz, granite isn't manufactured: it's quarried. Granite is an igneous rock, formed as molten magma cooled slowly beneath the earth's surface over millions of years, which is what gives it that distinctive crystalline, speckled structure. Once quarried in huge blocks, granite is sliced into slabs, before being polished, honed, or leathered to the finish you choose.
