Black Granite Kitchen Worktops
Black granite kitchen worktops have been a mainstay of British kitchens for decades, and it's easy to see why. Quarried from the earth in solid blocks, then sliced, polished, and fabricated to your exact kitchen plan, a black granite worktop has a depth, weight, and shine that no laminate, foil, or printed effect worktop can fully replicate.
Black granite worktops have been at the heart of our business since Henderstone was founded in 2005, and every slab that leaves our Staplehurst workshop is hand-selected by our team.
Whether you're drawn to a flat, jet-black polish, a granite flecked with quartz, mica, and feldspar, or the dramatic sparkle finish of a starlit sky, we have a worktop to suit your kitchen, budget, and timeline, with most installations completed within a week of templating.

Black Granite Worktop Colours & Effects
Not everything claiming to be 'black granite' online is actually granite. Search around and you'll find plenty of black granite-effect laminate and printed worktops, designed to mimic the look of natural stone at a lower price. These can be a practical shout for a rental property or a tight budget, but they won't offer the same depth, durability, or resale value as the real thing, since the printed pattern sits on the surface rather than running through the material.
At Henderstone, we work exclusively with genuine, quarried black granite. Within our range, you'll find a few distinct effects:
- Solid black granites, such as Premium Black Polished, give a deep, uniform, near-flawless finish
- Flecked and galaxy-effect granites, such as Nero Cosmos and Star Galaxy, scatter fine mineral deposits across the surface for a subtle sparkle
- Leathered and honed finishes soften the shine of polished black granite for a more contemporary, tactile surface that hides fingerprints and light marks particularly well

Black Granite Kitchen Ideas
Black granite is one of the most versatile worktop colours there is, working equally well in period cottages, contemporary new-builds, and everything in between. A few ways our customers have used it:
- Oak kitchen with a black granite worktop: pairing warm oak or timber cabinetry with a black granite worktop is a popular combination, with the natural wood grain softening the boldness of the stone.
- All-black kitchens: black granite worktops paired with matte black or navy cabinetry create a striking, restaurant-style kitchen, which is particularly effective with brass or gold fittings.
- Two-tone islands: use an eye-catching black granite, such as Star Galaxy or Nero Cosmos, on a statement island, with a paler quartz or granite on the surrounding run.
- Black granite splashbacks and upstands: matching upstands and splashbacks in the same slab create a seamless, high-end finish with no grout lines to clean.
How to Clean Black Granite Worktops
Black granite shows marks and shine more readily than paler stones, so a little regular care keeps it looking its best:
- Everyday cleaning: Wipe up spills (particularly acidic ones like wine, lemon juice, or vinegar) as soon as they happen. For daily cleaning, warm water, a soft cloth, and a small amount of mild washing-up liquid are all you need. Avoid abrasive scourers, bleach, and acidic or ammonia-based cleaning products: they can dull the polish and strip the sealant over time.
- Polishing black granite worktops: To bring back the shine, use a specialist granite polish rather than a general kitchen spray, and buff with a soft, dry cloth in circular motions. This is particularly worthwhile on polished black granite, where any streaking or dullness will be more visible.
- Sealing and protecting your worktop: Granite is a natural, porous stone, so it should be professionally sealed on installation and resealed periodically (typically every one to two years, depending on use) to keep it stain resistant and hygienic. A simple test is to splash a little water onto the surface: if it beads rather than soaking in, your seal is still doing its job. Using a trivet or worktop saver under hot pans, and a board for food prep, will also help protect the surface and the sealant long-term, even though black granite is naturally heat- and scratch-resistant.
- Chips and repairs: Black granite is tough, but accidental chips can happen. Don't reach for a generic DIY worktop repair kit, which can leave a visible patch on a dark, reflective surface, and get a professional opinion first. Take a look at our guide to stone repair and restoration, or get in touch and we can advise on the best fix for your worktop.
How is Granite Made?
Unlike quartz, granite isn't manufactured: it's quarried. Granite is an igneous rock, formed as molten magma cooled slowly beneath the earth's surface over millions of years, which is what gives it that distinctive crystalline, speckled structure. Once quarried in huge blocks, granite is sliced into slabs, before being polished, honed, or leathered to the finish you choose.
At Henderstone, we then cut, edge, and finish each slab to your exact kitchen template at our Staplehurst workshop, so your worktop is fabricated specifically for your space.
