Granite Care Guide

Granite is a beautiful, durable, hygienic material - ideally suited to countertops and worksurfaces. Your granite surface will provide a lifetimes service if cared and maintained properly. The following guide has been devised to ensure you get the most from your granite worktopsin the years to come.

Scratching / Chipping / Heat

Granite is one of the hardest materials in the world, it is highly scratch, chip and heat resistant but it is not indestructible. Although it is possible to cut on granite and out pans from the oven directly on to it we do not recommend this as doing this repeatedly will cause wear over years of use. We advise using a chopping board and a trivet to protect your investment. It is important to take extreme care when using heavy cast iron pots and pans, never drag these across the surface and be careful not to bash then against polished edges when putting in and taking out of sinks and dishwashers.

Staining

Granite is a natural material and therefore absorbent to varying degrees, largely dependent on the colour and geological compositions. The darker granites are usually tighter grained and harder than the lighter colours, and therefore possess better liquid and usage repelling properties

Materials that can stain granite are lemon juice, wine, vinegars, nail varnish and solvent/oil based products. Granite is extremely stain resistant, however, substances such as oil and grease should be cleaned from the work surface as quickly as possible.

All our surfaces are sealed before leaving our workshop and where necessary once installed with lithofin stain stop. This will need re-applying every 2-4 years depending on the type of granite.

Daily care

We recommend daily cleaning with warm soapy water and then buff using Ecloth or chamois leather. Alternatively there a specialist stone worktop cleaners available from most supermarkets. Never use abrasive scouring pads, bleach based Cilit Bang type cleaners; these will strip the sealer from the surface and cause dulling effect overtime.
